RADIATION FOR CHILDHOOD CANCERS
Treatment of childhood cancers requires very special care, attention, and expertise. Our department along with the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital (which is on the campus of Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, FL) provides the comprehensive oncology services required in treating children who have cancer. Our program is uniquely patient and family centered, with patients benefiting from a multi-disciplinary approach to the care of cancer patients and their families.
We treat more children with cancer than any other hospital in Broward County. The team includes Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists, Pediatric Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Diagnostic Radiologists, Pathologists, Anesthesiologists, Pediatric Nurses, and Social Workers. We have on-site pediatric anesthesiology services, which are often required when giving radiation treatment to very young children. Our integrated team approach ensures continuity of care.
We are also a full member institution of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), and participate in national and international research programs and clinical trials. The COG includes 240 member hospitals that work together to treat most children diagnosed with cancer in the United States and Canada. These institutions include all major universities and teaching hospitals in the USA and Canada. COG institutions must fulfill stringent competence, commitment, and compliance criteria. All COG institutions offer comprehensive, multi-disciplinary childhood cancer treatment services, as required by the American Society of Pediatric Hematology / Oncology.
